I feel that GHS has allowed me to explore talents that I didn’t even know I had. I love acting and I truly truly have a passion for the fine arts department here. The thing I love the most about working on the shows here at the Poplar Pike Playhouse, is that we all come together. No one has a small job; we all make the show what it is. Not only do we work hard, but we have so much fun doing so. It’s not everyday that you can step out of character and be applauded for it! The PPP is my second home, my second family,
Working on the plays at the PPP isn’t like anything thing else. Especially lighting, getting to be such a huge aspect of the show and getting this much responsibility really gets your blood pumping. The teachers guide us from start to finish and it’s just a great experience on a whole.
When I came to GHS, I wanted to be a part of a tight-knit community, and that's what production is. I love having the opportunity to showcase my creativity both behind the scenes and on the PPP stage, and being around people who share my passions. With props, I get to create these intricate set pieces that help the show come to life. When on stage, I get to transform into someone else and decide who this character is and what her purpose is in the story.
Congratulations to these IB juniors, David Lee and Kimberly Baldwin, from Germantown High School! David and Kimberly have won the prestigious Superior Achievement in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English. Applicants submitted a four-page essay on this year’s theme “Changing the Narrative” and six pages of what they considered to be his or her best work. David and Kimberly are two of four winners in the state of TN and the only winners from Shelby County Schools.
Congratulations to these IB juniors for their outstanding writing awards. Marcos Garcia has won 2nd place in essay writing from the regional writing competition, sponsored by the University of Mississippi. Jessica Nelms is the winner of the first Rhodes College Sonnet Competition. Jessica won in the “contemporary sonnet” category.
