Hi! My name is Olivia Vo, and I'm currently a senior at Germantown High School. I had the honor of attending the Governor School for International Studies during the summer before my junior year. I had never done Model UN in my life and was terrified to be attending classes with seniors at that time.
To my surprise, my Governor School experience was the best month of my life. I have never lived away from home, and although the thought of that was initially frightening, I grew super close to my roommate and residence counselor. I got a feel for college life and college lectures. In that one month, I learned Portuguese, built a global village out of plastic bags, and performed Adele songs in front of 64 people.
Governor School for International Studies allowed me to explore issues in politics amidst the upcoming election and helped me get out of my comfort zone to do things I truly love. I formed connections that still last to this very day (imagine being in a groupchat of over sixty people), and my gov school friends have greatly helped me in my college selection process. Although I tend to be more attracted to the science fields, I knew that I wanted to be involved in international relations, and this unforgettable experience enabled me to gain familiarity with the topic. Governor School has also shown me the merits of attending the University of Memphis. The professors, staff, and residence counselors made me feel at home, and I can say with absolute confidence that Governor School has helped me build my confidence, improve my time management skills, and most importantly, gain a whole new family.
